parking your bike in the city

I admit I am only a recent bike commuter in Detroit. I'm still not always sure about where to park my bike. What happens if I lock my bike in an unauthorized spot (light post or street sign comes to mind)? Will the police cut my lock and take the bike? Will I get a ticket? I realize that the chance of that is so slim in Detroit, but I still want to be able to lock my bike up somewhere safe, and "official".
As such, I am always on the lookout for safe places to park my bike. Recently I came across M-bike.org's interactive Detroit bike parking map and was thrilled to have all this info in one spot, and on an interactive map no less. Each spot has a picture, and GPS coordinates listed, in case you use a GPS device. Now if only this information can be put into a smartphone app.
If you haven’t checked out M-bike's website yet, I suggest giving them a click. They are a wonderful resource for biking in the city.
